Kruger National Park Accommodation from Hoedspruit
Hoedspruit is one of the closest towns to Kruger's central-western boundary. Which Kruger gate is closest?
Four Kruger entry gates are practical from Hoedspruit. Orpen is by far the closest, but Phalaborwa opens up the elephant-heavy Letaba / Olifants region and Numbi puts you within reach of the greener southern Kruger.

- Orpen Gate. Closest central gate — enters open plains, Satara / Timbavati area.
- Phalaborwa Gate. Enters near the Letaba / Olifants region.
- Paul Kruger Gate (Skukuza). Enters southern Kruger — Skukuza main-camp region.
- Numbi Gate. Southern gate near Hazyview.
Distances from Hoedspruit town centre; add ~5 minutes from the estate. The Malelane and Crocodile Bridge gates in the far south are 4+ hours and not practical for a day trip.
When does Kruger open and close?
Entry gates and camp gates open at the same time and enforce closing strictly (fines for late arrivals). You must be inside a rest camp or out of the park by closing time. Times shift with the season:

What does it cost to drive into Kruger?
SANParks daily conservation fees, valid 1 November 2025 – 31 October 2026:
- South African citizens & residents (with ID) — R134 per adult per day
- SADC nationals (with passport) — R275 per adult per day
- International visitors — R602 per adult per day
- Wild Card holders — No daily conservation fee
Children pay roughly half rate. Cards accepted at the gate — cash usually is too, but bring a backup.
Private reserves that share Kruger's fenceline
The fences between Kruger National Park and the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR) were dropped from 1993 onwards, creating an unfenced open system where wildlife moves freely. Four APNR reserves border Kruger to the west, right near Hoedspruit:
- Timbavati Private Nature Reserve — direct western border with Kruger; north of Orpen Gate.
- Klaserie Private Nature Reserve — the largest private reserve in South Africa; adjoins Kruger to the west.
- Balule Nature Reserve — north of Klaserie; adjoins Kruger near the Olifants River.
- Umbabat Private Nature Reserve — small reserve between Timbavati and Klaserie.
Kapama and Thornybush are private reserves close to Hoedspruit but sit inside their own fence lines — check current status with the reserve directly.
Self-drive: what you can and can't do
- Speed limits: 50 km/h on tar, 40 km/h on gravel.
- Stay in your vehicle at all times except at designated get-out points (rest camps, picnic sites, some hides).
- No off-road driving — stick to marked tar and gravel roads.
- No body parts (arms, heads, cameras) out of windows or sunroofs.
- No night driving in public areas — reach camp or the gate before closing.
- Vehicles over 4,000 kg are restricted to tar roads.
- 4x4 is not required — the main road network is tarred or well-graded gravel, comfortable in a sedan.
Malaria and best time to visit
Kruger and the Hoedspruit Lowveld are classified low-to-intermediate malaria risk, seasonal. Risk is highest October–May (peak February–May, wet season). July–September is low-risk. Consult a GP about prophylaxis, especially for wet-season visits. In-room air-conditioning, DEET repellent and covered skin at dusk–dawn all reduce risk.
For pure game viewing, the dry season (May–September/October) is best — thinner bush, animals concentrated at waterholes, cooler days. First light and the last two hours before sunset are the premium windows.
